Journey to the heart of a glacier Plaine Morte

“At Avocado360, we ventured deep into the Plaine Morte Glacier, capturing its final whispers before they vanish, and telling the story of a disappearing world.”

Avocado360’s Expedition into the Melting Plaine Morte Glacier

Capturing the Depths of Time

At Avocado360, we thrive on pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling, especially when capturing the raw beauty and urgent realities of our changing planet. Recently, we had the extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with renowned cave researchers Frédéric Bétrisey and Hervé Krummenacher, who have dedicated years to studying the rapidly melting Plaine Morte Glacier in the Swiss Alps. This was more than just an assignment it was a mission to document a crucial environmental phenomenon and bring it to life for the public.

The Challenge: Documenting the Hidden Heart of a Melting Glacier

The Plaine Morte Glacier is one of the fastest melting glaciers in the Alps, a harbinger of the profound changes happening in our mountains. Each summer, the Lac des Faverges, a meltwater lake, forms within the glacier, only to drain abruptly through hidden channels deep below the ice. This phenomenon, where water drains at a staggering rate of up to 20 cubic meters per second, intrigued our team and the scientists alike.

For us at Avocado360, the task was straightforward: to visually capture this enigmatic world beneath the ice using cutting-edge technology, all while facing the intense physical challenges of working in such an extreme environment.

“Our mission wasn’t just to document a melting glacier it was to unveil the hidden world beneath the ice, creating a visual legacy for the planet’s urgent realities.”

The Technical Feats & Personal Challenges – Avocado360 Transparent

The Technical Feats: Bringing the Glacier’s Secrets to Life

Our journey took us at least 80 meters below the ice surface, where we faced near-total darkness and the claustrophobic tightness of ice walls formed thousands of years ago. Armed with a 360° camera, photography equipment, and the determination to capture every detail, we ventured into the glacier with only our helmet headlights to guide us.

Photographing and filming in such conditions required a blend of technical precision and creative problem-solving. The 360° camera, essential for creating immersive panoramas, had to be carefully maneuvered through narrow passages, balancing light and shadow to convey the immense scale and eerie beauty of the environment.

Beyond the visuals, we also incorporated sound design into the project, capturing the subtle but powerful sounds of dripping water, shifting ice, and the occasional groan of the glacier, adding a profound auditory layer to the story.

The Personal Challenges: Facing the Glacier’s Wrath

Navigating through the glacier was physically exhausting and mentally taxing. The tight spaces and the overwhelming silence, broken only by the sound of our breaths and the occasional crack of ice, intensified the sense of urgency to capture this vanishing world.

Every shot felt like documenting a fleeting moment in time, a snapshot of a world that may not exist much longer as the glacier continues to melt.

The Recognition: A Groundbreaking Achievement

The culmination of our work was a multimedia story published in the Tages-Anzeiger, combining visuals, sound, and compelling storytelling to convey the stark realities of climate change.

Avocado360 became the first Swiss team to win the prestigious Nannen Prize and the Deutscher Reporterpreis for multimedia storytelling, solidifying our reputation for innovative visual journalism.

The Result: A Story that Resonates

For Avocado360, this project was more than just a showcase of technical skill—it was a reminder of why we tell stories. We believe in the power of visual storytelling to inspire action, raise awareness, and leave a lasting impact. Whether deep within a glacier or in the heart of a city, our mission remains the same: to capture the world’s most compelling stories and bring them to life.
