KKL Luzern was designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, with acoustics engineered by Russell Johnson, and is widely ranked among the world's finest concert halls, alongside Vienna's Musikverein and Berlin's Philharmonie. The concert hall opened on 19 August 1998 with a performance by the Berliner Philharmoniker under Claudio Abbado, who later founded the Lucerne Festival Orchestra on this stage, now directed by Riccardo Chailly.
Every summer since, the Lucerne Festival has brought some of the world's leading orchestras and soloists to KKL Luzern, from the Wiener Philharmoniker to festival regulars such as pianist Martha Argerich. The first contact came in 2014, from Allen Worthington in KKL Luzern's IT department. The brief: an tour virtuale interattivo that would make the halls tangible for congress and event clients, serve as a marketing tool, and give the wider public, who would otherwise never set foot inside, a real look at the building. It was practical for the performing artists themselves too, a way to see where they would be standing before they ever arrived.

The biggest constraint was access: KKL Luzern's halls are booked almost continuously, and free windows between rehearsals, concerts and congresses had to be scheduled with precision. The concert hall itself added a second challenge, its dark blue, star-lit ceiling and shifting materials required careful lighting for every single panorama.
The finished tour covers the celebrated white concert hall, the Lucerne Hall, the Auditorium, the World Café, the Seebar, the RED restaurant and the lakeside terraces along Europaplatz.

The result is a full 360° walkthrough, still online and fully functional more than a decade after it was filmed. In the Swiss press, the project was described as a “virtual KKL tour”. Visitors move freely between rooms, arriving at a far more precise sense of the architecture than photographs alone could give.
